A friend shared this special WhatsApp message with me:
Bruce Lee (not his real name): Pieta (not his real name), thank you for being in my life. I know we don’t talk often and see one another even less, but you are someone I really look up to.
I hope that our paths will cross more often in future. You are a role model for me and will hopefully become a mentor one day. I would like to learn from you and grow. I want to make a plan to meet up with you more often.
Thank you for being who and what you are.
What a beautiful testimony about my friend! I would love to get a message like this one day. On that day I will humbly fall to my knees and thank the Lord for helping me to be an example someone else can look up to.
We must realise that we need friends to help us through the rough patches in life. We cannot do it on our own – we’re simply too weak to have all the right answers. We need wisdom. We need someone to show us how. Someone who has travelled the road already, who has taken a few wrong turns already.
I know Pieta wasn’t always the straightest guy. Well, even now there are times when he’ll cross the boundaries, because he regularly tests the boundaries. He doesn’t sit back; he looks for new ways to break ground. That’s the spirit that the Lord gave him. But he is the first one to admit his mistakes and will correct them quickly.
In everything he not only tries his utmost to live his God given calling, but he also tries to live right. Everywhere he goes he tries to make a difference. When life throws him a bad curve ball, he asks strength from above to withstand it. He is honest. What you see is what you get, and enough with the rest.
Bruce wants to live like that too. Fortunately, Bruce realises he cannot do it on his own and asks Pieta to help him.
And the same thing had happened to Philemon. Listen to what Paul says to him:
6And I keep praying that this faith we hold in common keeps showing up in the good things we do, and that people recognize Christ in all of it.
Paul has gone down that road before. Paul knows the wrong side of life, but also how to live life right. Paul knows how to make God part of your life. Paul understands God and knows the promises that He keeps.
Philemon is fortunate in having such a teacher. Bruce is just as fortunate to have a friend, teacher and mentor like Pieta in his life.
This encourages us to be such a mentor to other people in our lives. Yes, we may mess up, so let’s get up and try again, because then we can one day help others to remain standing in the wild world.
Live like this: What you see is what you get, and enough with the rest.
Who is an example to you?
For whom can you be an example?
How can you do it?
Father, I get so caught up in my own stuff that I forget that the way I live can set an example for others. Please help me be honest about my mistakes, but also to be willing to share with others how You helped me overcome them. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
